WANT Original Content

You may recall that WANT featured an article last Winter that helped you get in touch with 100% of the key trends of the season. Well, WANT’s fashion series is back, spearheaded by one of our most fashion-savvy writers. Before you hit up your favorite stores for a little mid-summer shopping, check out WANT’s fashion rundown of what’s hot and what’s even hotter.

1. Open-backed anything
Some see the words “open” and “backed” together and start to get a little bit nervous. We hear you, but let us be the first to say that this summer trend is one that’s worth pushing your comfort zone for. Whether you are wearing a cute open-backed dress or a flirty opened-back tank with a pair of high-wasted shorts, this trend will help keep out the heat while also allowing you to show off a part of your body that’s normally covered up. Since open-backed items are usually paired with high necklines, don’t worry about being too revealing. Pair the open-back with a cute bralette or stretchy bandeau (or nothing at all), and you will be good to go.

2. Lace bralette
Speaking of clothing items to pair with an open back, the flirty vibe of lace bralettes are currently all the rage. This fun fashion accessory is a great way to spice up any outfit. They are comfy, simple, and good for any occasion whether it’s a fancy dinner with the family or a night out on the town. Pair it with a fun sundress, tank top, or cropped top and you will perfect the look.

3. Fabric shorts galore
Jean shorts have been around for ages, but many people forget about fabric shorts. Comfy and easy, wearing fabric shorts feels a lot like walking around in pajamas. Fabric shorts come in all sorts of styles, ranging from printed, to high-wasted, to cheeky. They work for hiking with friends, hanging at the pool, or going to summer school, so you will never feel as though your wardrobe is out of place. Wear them with a tight crop top or “flowy” tank, but either way you will be the perfect combo of comfy and trendy.

4. Jelly Shoes (watch out Birkenstocks)
They may be ugly, but upon further inspection jelly shoes are pretty cool. They are cheap, comfortable, and easy to slip on and off. They look great with bare feet or high socks. Although jelly shoes provide a more casual vibe, when you are feeling super adventurous they can be fun to wear with a ball gown or to work. Having a hard time getting past the fact that jelly shoes are made of plastic? Just think of them as fancy flip flops. Before you know it, you will be saying “so long” birks and “hello” jellies.

5. Jean/regular mini skirts
Circle skirts had their reign and it’s now time to welcome the era of the ultra-preppy mini-skirt. This new style, which is something like school uniform meets club attire, is great for summer because it allows you to look put together and sophisticated while also showing a little skin. Choose a jean skirt if you want a vintage look or a patterned plaid if you are feeling intellectual. Pair it with an open-backed bralette, a flower crown, and round sunglasses and you are ready for a summer concert. Pair it with a flowy tank and heels and you’re ready for a date. Whatever way you choose to wear it, once you adopt this trend, there’s no going back.

6. Triangl bathing suits
Normally, it’s hard to achieve a distinctive look in a bathing suit, but Australian-based Triangl is giving that assumption a run for its money. Though pricy, Triangl’s simple but vibrant suits offer a different take on bathing suits, utilizing clean lines, geometric shapes, and comfortable, sustainable fabrics that are flattering to all body types. When you are wearing a Triangl suit, everyone will know it.

7. Cropped or highwaisted anything
Cropped and high-wasted are two styles that never grow old. This summer, drag out your high-wasted skirts, shorts, and even jeans and match them with your favorite cropped t’s, tanks, sweaters, and sweatshirts. High wastes make everyone look long and lean, and crop tops are a great way to stay cool and show a little skin. Though this style is popular all year, high-wasted shorts and crop tops are the paragon of summer fashion. If there is a chill in the air, you can throw on a light cardigan, wear socks your Birkenstocks, and you are ready for action.

9. Graphic tees
Though summer fashion should be all about simplicity, especially when it comes to t-shirts, this is the summer of the “graphic t.” Whether your shirt is cropped, long, or a tank, simple colors with a quote, phrase, or word are all the rage. Whether the words are inspirational or a little bit edgy, these shirts are a great way to express your personality and embrace your wild side. Pair them with some high-wasted jean shorts and before you know it you you’ll be a fashionista whose clothes do all the talking.

10. Flirty t-shirt dress
Though baby doll dresses are still popular, it is time for them to yield their position to the t-shirt dress. This somewhat surprising trend looks just like it sounds — an oversized t-shirt fashioned into a dress. Loose and somewhat shapeless (in a good way), these dresses are super comfy and look great on anyone – tall or short. Pick out a solid color or fun pattern and you will be good to go. Add a pair of high socks, heels, or just keep things simple with a pair of birks. Wear it over your bathing suit or to the mall. However you wear it, this new take on a summer sundress will keep you up-to-date with the latest fashion trends.

11. Rompers
Jumpsuits were all the rage in the spring (link), but now that summer is upon us it is time to bring out the rompers. Rompers make morning outfit planning beautifully simple. With rompers, there’s no need to pick out both shorts and a shirt, and you don’t have to worry about your sundress riding up. When you have on a romper, you are ready for just about any summer activity. Patterns and solid colors both work and rompers are fun, comfy, and easy to wear with just about anything.

With these summer fashion tips in mind, you will look (and feel) cool, confident, and ready to strut your stuff on any summer runway or beachfront promenade.
