Here’s something that every highschooler knows and that the school board chooses to ignore:
Waking up early for school sucks. Research shows that U.S. teens are sleep deprived, which is unsurprising considering the insane amount of pressure placed upon us to excel in our after school athletics, to excel in our Advanced Placement classes, and to somehow find time to study for the SAT and ACT exams. The average high schooler is lucky to get 7 ½ hours of sleep a night. School would be so much more enjoyable if it started at least an hour later, and there’s science to back that up.
Around puberty, the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle shifts, making it difficult for teens to fall asleep before 11 p.m. When we’re being forced to arrive at school at 8:00 a.m., many of us are only getting something like 6.5 hours of sleep. Although it may not seem like much, starting school at 9:00 p.m. will make a HUGE difference. One school in Englandreported that persistent absenteeism dropped by 27 percent after allowing the day to start an hour later.
I for one would be more on time and alert for school with the extra time to sleep in. In my classes, there is always a percentage of students who are nodding off if not already napping. I’m certain teachers and students alike would appreciate the school day starting at 9:00 a.m
