You may have seen the jars decorated with the words “Adopt a Family” in your English classes and at lunch, but do you realize how much your generous contributions have impacted the lives of six local families? This year with the combined efforts of Carlisle High School’s students and staff, a total of $2,108.91 was raised by the four class councils. These donations are going to have a tremendous impact on the lives of people in our community. Theresa Dixon, a family and consumer science teacher at Carlisle High School, describes Adopt a Family as “a program that raises funds for local families that without assistance would otherwise not have a Holiday season filled with gifts and supplies for their Holiday dinner.” According to City-Data, 14% of Carlisle residents are below the poverty level (based on 2013 data). Adopt a Family helps to make a difference in some of these people’s lives. Although not everyone in the community can be helped, the idea that donations made by CHS can bright someone’s holiday is reconciling to some. Caitlyn Padgett, a student who has helped out with the Adopt a Family calls it a “phenomenal program.” Padgett says that “it allows you to see [the] impact you can have by doing something as powerful as a school coming together and raising money for others to have a [holiday season].”
